Does a static reactive power generator have the function of a capacitor?

Static Var Generator (SVG) has the function of a capacitor, but the two differ in function and principle. ‌

The working principle and functions of SVG

SVG detects parameters such as current and power factor through power electronic components, and generates reactive current that meets the requirements after calculation. SVG can quickly absorb or emit the required reactive power, achieve dynamic reactive power compensation, and has advantages such as good compensation effect, high compensation accuracy, and fast response speed. In addition, SVG can improve the power quality at the connection point between the load and the public grid, increase the power factor, overcome three-phase imbalance, eliminate voltage flicker and voltage fluctuations, and suppress harmonic pollution.

The difference between SVG and capacitors

Working principle: Power capacitors compensate for the reactive power required by inductive loads by generating capacitive reactive current. SVG, on the other hand, detects system parameters through power electronic components and generates reactive current that meets the requirements after calculation.

Cost and installation: Power capacitors have low cost, simple installation and maintenance, and are suitable for enterprises of various sizes and different types of loads. Although SVG has good compensation effect, its cost is relatively high and installation and maintenance are relatively complex.

Application scenario: For enterprises with high requirements for power quality, SVG is a better choice. For general electrical environments, power capacitors are still a more common choice due to their low cost and high cost-effectiveness.
